MANUAL HANDLING

In today's 'fast-moving' industry, handling of loads in the workplace incorrectly may result in strains, backpain and possible fractures.

GAP are committed to helping the industry by offering a range of products and equipment which can be used eliminate manual handling risks, or assist in manual handling operations.

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (reviewed March 2004), provides the basis to allow employers to tackle the risks that Manual Handling poses. Where employers cannot avoid Manual Handling and the risks of injury, employers must assess their operations and take appropriate action to reduce the risk of injury to the lowest level that is reasonably practicable.

The regulations require employers to:

- Avoid Manual Handling operations so far as it is reasonably practicable.

- Assess Manual Handling operations that cannot be avoided

- Reduce the risk of injury so far as is reasonably practicable

As the second part of the recent GAP 'Lift with Care' poster campaign shows below, a Manual Handling operation will require you to:

''Always remember to look at the task, individual, load and environment''
