GAP's 50th anniversary
GAP Hire Solutions is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
From humble beginnings, GAP has grown to become the UK's largest independent plant, tools, equipment and vehicle rental company. Established in 1969 by Gordon Anderson, the family-owned and run business operates from 142 depots and employs over 1,800 people nationwide.
Gordon Anderson’s sons, Douglas and Iain (pictured below), have led the business as Joint Managing Directors since 1988, ensuring that the same family principles on which the company were founded continue to this day. The third generation of the family is heavily involved as we look to break the £200m-turnover mark this year.
Iain Anderson commented: “I derive tremendous satisfaction in what we have achieved to date. Douglas and I recognise and value the heritage of the GAP brand and appreciate that we are the custodians of it. With every new opportunity to explore there are also additional challenges to meet, but nothing excites me more than a challenge!”
A key feature of GAP’s growth story has been the company’s successful diversification beyond plant and tool hire into more specialist areas since the recession of 2008/09.
The new divisions launched by GAP following the recession in recent years; Lifting Equipment Hire, Non-Mechanical Plant, Trenching & Shoring, Survey and Safety Hire, Welfare Services, Events Services and Vehicle Hire, now account for 30% of overall revenues.
In addition to adapting to our customers exacting requirements and broadening our product offering with equipment to make our customers’ lives more productive, safer and environmentally friendly, GAP is constantly innovating to improve our service and enhance our customers’ hire experience. For example, the same-day delivery promise on Club 100 tools was launched this year in response to customer demand.
Douglas Anderson added: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our staff, customers, suppliers and friends; this 50-year milestone is a testament to their longstanding commitment and support. With the continued backing of so many dedicated and loyal people, I look forward to playing my part in taking our business to the next level.”
GAP has launched a commemorative book in celebration of the company’s 50th anniversary on 22nd April 2019, which chronicles the development of the company from its inception to its plans for the future. The various contributions throughout the book have come from the Anderson family as well as GAP’s employees, customers, suppliers and friends of the family and company. The book is available to read online here.
The creation of the 50th anniversary logo and publishing of the book are just the beginning of what GAP has in store to celebrate its anniversary. To keep up to date with our celebrations, follow us on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter or Instagram.
