Project Playground is far from child’s play

GAP’s Events Division Manager Daimon Dunhue is one of seven volunteers who will fly to India on 23rd October to help build a new children’s playground in Malur, Karnakata Province, which is near Bangalore. The trip is being organised by Rat Race who are one of GAP Event Services’ loyal customers along with the charities Playground Ideas and Headstreams.

How this opportunity came about:

Rat Race run a series of adventure sports events in the UK. Following recent events organised in Australia, they were left with a container full of obstacles on the other side of the world and with no immediate or obvious use for the equipment. It would have been easy for them to go online and sell the equipment but they ‘wanted to give something back’ and help young people.

The project to construct a playground for children who do not have access to such facilities will cost in the region of £50,000. GAP has made a significant financial contribution towards this total; the crowdfunding page goes into more detail.

Daimon explains the motivating factors: “When initially discussing the concept with Rat Race Founder, Jim Mee, he told me that as a relatively new father, he loved seeing the pure joy that a playground brings to kids - it is such a simple pleasure. This really resonated with me and is one of the main reasons why I was keen to get involved as the kids we’re building the playground for don’t have access to outdoor play areas like we have here in the UK. I am expecting a tough seven days in hot conditions but I’m sure it will be an exciting experience too.”

Damion continued: “We are looking to raise further funds to put the ‘icing on the cake’ of this project. We would like to purchase a zip wire, some special climbing holds (to build a fun and safe climbing feature on the container), a safety net for a bailey bridge, some aluminium poles for a fireman’s pole descent and other unique items that will deliver the ‘wow factor’ and put a smile on the kids’ faces. No matter how large or small, every donation will help make a difference to what will be an amazing playground."
