Septic Tanks 101: How They Work and Why Regular Maintenance is Key How to Keep Your Systems Slowing Smoothly

Did you know that neglecting your septic tank could lead to costly repairs, environmental hazards, and even health risks? At GAP Tanker Services, we’re here to ensure your system stays trouble-free, so you can focus on what matters most.

What is a Septic Tank?

A Septic Tank is a buried, underground container that partially treats and disposes of wastewater from homes and buildings, typically found in rural areas, that are not connected to a municipal sewer system. Typically made from concrete, fibreglass or plastic, the tank holds and breaks down waste materials through a natural biological process.

How Do Septic Tanks Work?

  • Wastewater Collection: Water from toilets (blackwater), sinks, showers and kitchen appliances (greywater).
  • Separation of Solids and Liquids: Once inside the septic tank, the wastewater separates into layers:
    • Sludge: Heavier solids, settle at the bottom of the tank.
    • Scum: Lighter materials including fats, oils and grease float to the top.
    • Biological treatment: Bacteria, break down organic pollutants in the wastewater, converting them into safe substances.
    • Effluent Filtration: The filtered liquids (effluent) pass through a filter, where it undergoes further purification.
    • Flow to the Drain Field: The filtered effluent flows to a drain field, a network of pipes buried in the soil.
    • Soil Filtration: Microorganisms in the soil clean the water before it re-enters the environment.
    • Final Purification: As the treated water percolates into native soil, remaining impurities are removed.
    • Return to the Environment: The clean water eventually reaches the groundwater, which drains into nearby waterworks, completing the natural purification cycle.

Why Regular Maintenance is Essential

Think of your septic tank as a car—it works best with regular check-ups! Neglecting your septic tank maintenance can lead to:

  • Clogs: Solids can block pipes, causing slow drains and backups.
  • Backups: A full tank can send wastewater back into your home, causing unpleasant odours and health risks.
  • Overflow: An overfull tank can lead to effluent overflowing, which will contaminate the surrounding soil and groundwater.
