Why Every Excavation Needs a Risk Assessment
Under Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) guidance on safety in excavations and Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, any excavation deeper than 1.2 metres, or any excavations in unstable ground, regardless of depth, needs proper support. No ground can be assumed to stand unsupported, even if it held up fine on a previous project or “looks fine”. A proper risk assessment should be conducted prior to every excavation taking place. This should consider soil type, groundwater, nearby loads, weather conditions and how long the trench will stay open, not just how deep it is.
The Warning Signs
Warning signs can be easy to miss. Keep an eye out for:
- Cracking or crumbling at the trench edge
- Visible bulging or slumping in the trench wall
- Water ingress or groundwater seepage (sometimes caused by heavy rain)
- Previously disturbed or backfilled ground
- Vibration from nearby plant, traffic or machinery
- Spoil stacked too close to the edge
